Veterinary Line Manager

Job Title: Veterinary Manager
Location: Hospital & Branch Surgeries
Reports to: Managing Director

1. Purpose of Job

To contribute to the overall success of the Practice by ensuring veterinary team receive strong leadership, allowing them to perform to an exceptional level delivering excellent clinical care in accordance with practice policies.

2. Main duties

Strategic

  • Awareness of local and national veterinary market conditions.
  • Provide input into strategic development of the business.
  • Assess team to ensure strategic objectives can be met by existing staff.
  • Provide input to monthly management meeting.

Management

  • Recruitment/selection of vets with regard to with group strategy and requirements.
  • Deliver induction program and ongoing support of new vets during probation periods.
  • Quarterly monitoring of vet invoicing and actions arising.
  • Annual performance reviews of veterinary team.
  • Control of CPD budget - linked to group and individual performance and objectives
  • Management of vet Rotas/holidays
  • Effective communications with other departments to ensure organisational goals are achieved.
  • Day to day man management of team.
  • Assess and prioritise service complaints from clients.

Leadership

  • Clear and consistent decision making on key managerial issues.
  • Lead by example on clinical, presentational and protocol issues.
  • Keep a cool head under pressure.
  • Provide support to clinical team to assist colleagues in day to day decision making.

Clinical

  • Monitor clinical standards within team to ensure quality is of the required standard.
  • Cover shifts when required according to rota.

Direct Reports

  • 14 Vets.

3. Specialist Skills Required

  • Veterinary clinical and surgical skills.
  • Man management and communications skills.
  • Report writing.
  • Basic computer skills.

4. Personal Skills Required

  • Leadership skills to motivate staff in the team.
  • Business skills and the ability to communicate well with staff.
  • Ability to assimilate and analyse information, paying great attention to detail.
  • Ability to explain veterinary matters to colleagues clearly and simply.
  • Ability to work alone and as part of a team as required.
  • Ability to work under pressure and to deadlines, planning time and priorities.
  • Polite and persuasive with good presentation skills.
  • Sound decision making ability.
  • Good communication skills - verbal, written and listening.
  • Willingness to work unsocial hours.

5. Qualifications/Education Required

  • Veterinary Degree Essential - Registered MRCVS.
  • A recognised business qualification (e.g. Management certificate, diploma or masters) or willingness to work towards one.
  • Previous management experience.
