It may be cold across the UK but it’s exotic in Sidcup!
Veterinary Surgeon Laura Colyer, currently based at our Mottingham branch and the Foots Cray Hospital, recently undertook two very different but equalling challenging procedures on two of our more cold blooded clients.
Laura’s first challenge was to save a Bearded Dragon which had been bitten by its sibling during rather energetic play - breaking the bones in the leg and rendering it lame. Laura determined that the only way to give the young reptile a chance was to amputate the broken limb – not a common procedure in general practice, but one which could save this pet’s life.
Laura commented, “I had never had cause to perform such a procedure before and yet I was certain that the only chance for this reptile’s survival lay in amputation. I approached the case in just the same way as I would a similar procedure in a cat or dog and am thrilled that not only has the animal survived, but it is now thriving at home”.
Meanwhile, a tiny terrapin was developing abscesses in both its middle ears and was clearly in significant discomfort when it was brought in to the practice to see Laura. Having immediately seen that she would need to lance and flush the abscess Laura prepared herself with the tiniest of instruments and successfully relieved the pressure, emptied the swellings and cleaned the wounds. The owner reports that terrapin, measuring just 12cm in length is now fully recovered and swimming happily at home.
