Biography
Lisa joined the Parkvets team as a senior nurse back in April 2009 after moving to the area with her husband and having been at her previous practice for 10 years. She recalls that moving from a veterinary practice that had seen her train and qualify was a difficult decision but that she need not have worried as the team at Parkvets was so welcoming.
She comments, "My love of animals came at an early age when my parents bought me two gerbils named ‘hinge’ and ‘bracket’ - I still, to this day, have no idea why I called them that! Over the years many other ‘small’ pets followed including rabbits, budgies and a slow worm I found in the garden, if that counts?
Horses were another huge part of my life and I grew up spending most weekends and holidays at my local yard. I was so dedicated to them that I once walked for over an hour in deep snow to get to the stables to help feed and muck out! While most children my age were sliding down hills on their sledges, I was using mine as a makeshift straw and hay transporter. I later went on to complete a 2 year course in equine management at Hadlow College before training as a veterinary nurse.
I remember clearly when I decided i wanted to be a veterinary nurse, I was 14 years old and in a careers lesson in school. I was asked to complete a questionnaire, which, by some miracle would tell me which was the best job for me. I struggled to complete it, not because I couldn’t answer the questions but because i was trying to think how best to answer each question so it would come out with veterinary nurse as a job title! I didn’t do too badly, it came out as my second option, the first being a prison warden!!?
I gained my veterinary nursing qualification at Putlands veterinary surgery in tonbridge whilst attending Berkshire College of Agriculture. I qualified in 2004 and went on to be actively involved in nurse training, qualifying as a A.1 assessor in 2006 and clinical coach in 2010.
I also have a strong interest in radiography and diabetes having become a pet diabetes advisor (PDA) in 2006. This allows me to offer help and support to clients with diabetic pets, through their initial stabilisation and ongoing treatment."
