Biography

Alex graduated from Bristol University in 2004 and joined Parkvets in December of 2006.  He recently moved from our Bexley branch to the hospital and brings a keen interest in small animal veterinary care in a relaxed manner.

Alex has a blossoming interest in small animal surgery, with already many hours of tough surgical challenges under his belt. He hopes to soon undertake the veterinary certificate in small animal surgery. This course can take up to five years to complete and is the first step towards specialisation in this field.

"I think the main reason that I enjoy surgery so much is that it's good to get in and try to immediately fix a problem, and when your patient goes home able to walk again, or finally freed of chronic pain, it's the best feeling in the world!"

However it's fair to say that surgery is not his only interest, with his final elective module at university being in canine medicine and gastrology, a life-time of cat ownership, and a more than passing interest in rabbits.

Although possessing a gift for surgery Alex is along way from the usual gung-ho stereotype of a surgeon, "I think in this day it's important to be a well rounded practitioner and focus on what medicine can do for a patient too. I was not long qualified when our own cat Sheba developed kidney failure, and that's certainly a condition that surgery can't fix. Medicine was there to help her for as long as we could."

Asked what he hopes to bring to Parkvets, he replies: "I think the most important thing I want to do is help prevent disease and pick up on conditions early. I've only been in practice three years, and it already saddens me how often pets can come to us all too late. Our family was lucky that Sheba's kidney disease was picked up early (through yearly blood testing), it allowed us to have a great deal more time with her, and ensured she had a good last few years."

"I only want to ensure that my clients and pets get the same standards and care as I would expect for my own."
