Rabbit - F.A.Q's
Below is a list of the questions we are most commonly asked by rabbit owners
Q. Can my rabbit be neutered?
A. Yes, it's a good idea to spay the doe and castrate the buck. This can help to prevent or reduce aggression and territoriality. It also prevents uterine cancer in females.
Q. I've heard that rabbits aren't good with anaesthetics is this true?
A. That's true, rabbits aren't great with anaesthetics as they are quite prone to stress and may have subclinical lung disease. However at Parkvets we take the greatest care to minimise these risks by administering the safest anaesthetics, using heat pads and fluids where necessary and always having an anaesthetic nurse monitoring your pet throughout the procedure. As a result, complications associated with anaesthesia are very low.
Q. Why does my rabbit need its tear duct flushing if it's in for a dental?
A. Rabbits that have runny eyes often often do so because the cheek teeth are squashing the tear duct that runs just above the roots of the cheek teeth. If that is the case it is necessary to flush the tear duct to remove pus that collects there allowing proper drainage of the eye again. Unfortunately,if the dental disease is too bad even this may not help the runny eyes.
Q. Can I keep rabbits indoors?
A. Yes, rabbits can make good house pets but you will have to rabbit-proof your house!! See the British House Rabbit Association or House Rabbit Society websites for more details. Also be aware that some diseases tend to occur in indoor bunnies more frequently.
Q. My rabbits urine is red should I be worried?
A. Not necessarily rabbits can have red pigmentation in their urine quite naturally. We can do a quick test on your rabbit's urine sample to tell the difference.
Q. Pet shops sell rabbit treats, are they good for my pet?
A. No. We've even seen shops selling chocolate drops for rabbits! All these things will do is make your rabbit fat and less likely to eat...you guessed it...GRASS!
