Protect Your Rabbit from Flystrike
Flystrike can now be prevented with easy to use Rearguard from Novartis. This is the only licensed product for the prevention of blowfly strike in rabbits.
Fly strike or maggot infestation commonly occurs in hot humid weather and is generally seen between April and October. Where severe fly strike occurs the rabbit will become seriously ill and often die from the secondary shock.
Rearguard is a liquid application that is sold in a single-use bottle with a built-in sponge applicator that owners apply to the hindquarters of their rabbit. It gives approximately 8-10 weeks protection from maggot infestation. it is available only from veterinary surgeons.
The active product in Rearguard does not repel flies but is a insect growth inhibitor that prevents maggots developing and becoming big enough to feed on and damage its skin and deeper structures.
Parkvets clients should contact your local branch of Parkvets to find out more about this product and ordering it. This product is a POM. You will only be able to order this product by phone if your rabbit has had a health check within the last year by a Parkvets veterinary surgeon.
